Why This Kolaveri

Here is a song that has become so viral that it appears that this is arguably the 2nd most popular song in the world now.

While my role in recording this song was that of a coach and sound engineer (effectively assisted by budding sound engineer & my younger daughter Nikki) , this was sung by my niece, nephew & daughter (Prash, Suvi, Sneha respectively). It took them almost 3 hours to complete this song. Kudos to these kids for showing enthusiasm and willingness to belt out this catchy number from yet to release Tamil film "3" starring Dhanush.

I thoroughly enjoyed recording this song and so did the kids enjoyed singing it. We had lots of laughter and fun and I am sure you'll enjoy this as well.

Unnidam Mayangugiren

Here we go another song in short succession after my previous post. Looks like I am in mood...or is it this song is so compelling that I was motivated to post another song this quickly; well, either way, this next song from the movie "Then Sindude Vaanam" had some amazing songs composed by lesser known GK Venkatesh & V.Kumar.

This particular song sung by Yesudas was such a wonderful melody that you can definitely include this in your personal evergreen list. A very simple song with minimal instruments primarily made of piano & base rhythm. Infact this movie starring Sivakumar, Kamalahasan & Jayachitra had SP Balasubramanian singing another super hit title song as well.

Yesudas in his nascent voice sings this Valli's song with such magnificence, it really brings back memories of those bygone years... You got to pay attention to Valli's lyrics in this song, woh! just amazing! infact, I would say sensual. Close the door, turn off all other sounds, put your headsets on and enjoy this smooth song.

While this was a good karaoke track, you'll notice that the second BGM is slightly different from the original track and also in few places I had to work with the rhythm which I guess turned out OK in the end.

Sit back, relax and enjoy this wonderful song.

Vaa Vennila Unai Thane

This next song is from the film Mela Thiranthathu Kadavu starring Mohan & Amla. While the story line was very simple this movie primarily ran for the background score including the amazing songs that were composed by MS Viswanathan & Illayaraja. Yes, you heard it right, this movie's music was jointly scored by the "Mellisai Mannan" & "Isainyani". It's very rare in the film industry to see 2 champions in their own right come together and work together. All the songs in this movie were super hit.

This particular song was penned by Gangai Amaran, one of the many songs in which he excelled. SP Balasubramanian's smooth voice in this song kept it on the top of the charts for many months. I really like this song both for its rendition and its lyrics and luckily got a good karaoke track as well.

I think my karaoke effort has come out reasonably well, but obviously you are the best judge. But, I am sure you'll enjoy listening to the song as much as I enjoyed singing it.

Raasathi Ona Kanatha Neju

Here we go with another Illayaraja's hit from the 1984 Tamil feature film Vaidhei Karthirindhal. If you'd recall, R.Soundarrajan who currently does character roles in several Tamil movies once use to produce and direct offbeat films such as Payanangal Mudivathillai,' 'Amman Kovil Kizhakale', this is one such venture of his.

During that time Illayaraja was unstoppable and anything he did turned out to be a super hit number and I am sure folks from that genre will appreciate this song which was at the top of the charts for sometime. Originally sung by Jeyachandran, this song was enacted on screen by Vijaykanth & Revathi.

A very simple song without much importance to the singer, the focus on this song was more towards its lyrics and background score. Illayaraja's use of violins in this song with such brilliance brings out the fragrance of this melody. Though it might belong to the group of pathos, I still liked it for its melody and smooth tempo. Enjoy the song and leave your comments.

Oru Maalai

This next song is actually long pending and I owe an apology to my nephew Ram who was my inspiration behind this song. He strongly felt that I should make a karaoke of this number from the film Ghajini. That said, he identified the karaoke track and requested me a while a ago, but for some reason I couldn't spend the time until now. So Ram, this is for you.

I am sure all of you are familiar with this AR Murugadoss movie which was originally filmed in Tamil with Surya & Asin in lead roles and later was remade in Hindi with Aamir Khan & Asin. Music for the Tamil version was scored by Harris Jeyraj and infact all of the songs from this movie were hits of which this one was a chart buster. Originally sung by Karthik, one could say songs like these brought him to limelight.

Though the karaoke track itself didn't have clarity, I guess I have made a decent attempt in rendering this song. As always, listen, enjoy & provide your constructive comments.

Raja Raja Chozhan Naan

By now you would have noticed that I don't record many Yesudas songs in my blog. Obviously he is a genius and his renditions and are just awesome; but the suitability and track availability factors drive my song selection for making a karaoke. That said, this next song from the Tamil Film Rettai Val Kuruvi is such an awesome but simple song sung by Yesudas, music composed by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics by lesser known Metha. This song gives you the feel of sophistication and pure melody that you never get tired of listening to it.

On screen performance for this song was by Mohan, Raadhika and Archana. Wikipedia tells me that this movie was an unauthorized copy of the Hollywood flick Micki and Maude, though never acknowledged by Balu Mahendra this movie's director. Enough said now enjoy this wonderful Illayaraja's melody originally sung by Yesudas.

Hope you like it and please do leave your comments.

Nilave Ennidum Nerungathe

Gemini Ganesan (aka. Kadal Mannan) is one of those few unsung heroes of the Tamil Film industry who retained his own identity amongst other stars during his time. While MGR & Sivaji were considered as super stars of their era, Gemini (also affectionately called "Sambar")held his own and his genre movies were predominately romantic subjects which probably earned him the "kadal mannan" title. In those days his dress style were infact trendsetters.

PB Srinivas use to be the voice of choice for Gemini and this pathos number from the movie Raamu is no different. PBS with his silky voice has rendered this awesome song with such ease that it remains green even to this day. The lyrics for this song was written by Kannadasan for MS Viswanathan's music.

Those days songs with 3 charanams were so common and this one is no exception as well. Considering the length of this song I have limited my rendition to one charanam while the remaining ones infact follow the same pattern.

Hope I was able to get you nostalgic while you enjoy listening to my rendition of this song.

Nila Kaigirathu Neram Theigirathu

This wonderfully melodious Hariharan song from the film Indira is one of my favorite song. Though the movie itself wasn't commercially successful, most of the songs in this movie were good; particularly this one was a topper. I guess AR Rehman liked his creation so much he made this song in both male and female versions and honestly both were very pleasing. One other song I just love from this movie is "Thoda Thoda Malarndhadhena Poove", maybe if I get a good karaoke track I can attempt it later.

I couldn't get a good karaoke track of this song; nevertheless, given the melody of this song which is very compelling, I just did with what I had. Hope you like it.

Enough said, enjoy the song.

Behati Hawa Sa Tha Woh

My next song is from the award winning Hindi movie liked by folks from across the Indian sub-continent "3 Idiots". This movie adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi & Kareena Kapoor. Within short span of its release this movie broke all box-office records for collections which of course was later out performed by our Thalaivar Rajni's Enthiran.

With some outstanding songs and background musical score, the songs from this movie was at the top of the charts at its time. Its worth mentioning here that Swanand Kirkire lyricist for "Behti Hawa Sa Tha Wo" won a National Award for this song. A very pleasant melody originally sung by Shaan and music directed by Shantanu Moitra.

As always, I have tried to reproduce the onscreen magic with some of my own imagination and I hope you like it.

Netru Illada Matram Ennadu

This next song was a super hit from the film Pudhiya Mugam. Revathi was at her peak of acting career; and I should say, though this movie was a box office disaster, she pretty much carried the weight of this movie on her shoulders. While the awesome combo Vairamuthu & AR Rehman created this magical song, local radio stations never stopped playing this number for a long time. This song some what had a velvette & smooth feel. The music was crisp and sharp and the recording of this song had a fresh touch to it.

The songs from this movie were later reused in the Hindi movie Vishwavidhaata & the soundtrack was also released in Telugu as Padmavyuham. The film was directed by Suresh Menon (who also played the lead role), one time husband of Revathi.

While the original song was sung by Sujatha for Revathi on screen, I liked its lyrics therefore made a karaoke. I am sure you'll enjoy this song as well.

Apki Ankhon Mein Kuch...

While I realize my blogs are becoming fewer this year, I am going to work towards getting more regular with my updates. That said, my motivation for this song was from "youtube" and thanks to a good friend back in India who brought this to my attention. This Hindi song is one of my all time favorite.

From the film Ghar, this Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar song is evergreen. Such melodies by RD Burman are timeless. On screen Rekha was absolutely amazing.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this song on youtube and ofcourse loved singing it for you all. For those of you who would like to watch the video of this song here is a youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4wbgr386QU&feature=share. After some sound card issues on my computer, I was able to complete the male vocals of this song. Hope you enjoy!

Mun Paniya

It has been a while since I last updated my karaoke blog. Work pressure plus my busy schedule with our band Jersey Rhythms has really kept me away from this passionate exercise. Well now that I am back, lets talk music.

Past weekend saw some awesome carnatic music performances by TM Krishna & KJ Jesudas in New Jersey under the auspices of SIMHANA. That said, we at Jersey Rhythms have been busy at work performing for ASHA for Education a philanthropic organization focused in educating the poor and down trodden in India. Additionally, we have been rehearsing for our upcoming show in Atlanta for Georgia Tamil Sangam. Given all of the above, I still wanted to do this karaoke blog for 2 reasons: 1. Obviously it has been a while and long overdue. 2. My nephew insisted that I do this song.

This song is from the movie Nandha, starring Surya and Laila. Music was by Yuvan Shankar Raja and as you'd expect he has scored some awesome songs in this movie. This song in particular sung by SP Balasubramanian touches high notes / chords and to some extent proved to be a challenge. As always, I have tried to give it a shot and hope you like it. Enough said, now enjoy this melody penned by Pazhani Bharathi.

Santhanamum Jevathum

Happy New Year! to everyone. I wish you all a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy 2011.

I wanted to start my 2011 blogs with a happy number and narrowed my choice to this peppy number from the movie Valli. Apparently, this movie was produced by Rajnikanth and ended being a moderate success. Music & background score was by none other than Illayaraja. This particular song sung by SP Balasubramanian & SN Surendar was really awesome 1. From the perspective of its presentation 2. Foot tapping rhythm 3. Its casualness.

As a topping to an ice cream, I had the privilege of singing this song with my nephews and my daughter who lent their voice in finishing this song. While I would agree we could have done this better, I need to confess that we completed this song from scratch in less than 1 hour with almost all of the singers except myself not knowing this song. Given the above, I wanted to congratulate these youngsters volunteering to experiment.

As always listen, enjoy & please leave your constructive criticism .
